Hawaii, The Big Island Adventures with a Slower Pace

If the hustle and bustle of a big city puts you in a cantankerous mood, you are my kindred spirit.  A vacation is getting away from the crowds and decompressing.  If you like to see and do, but not feel rushed, the adventures of Hawaii, The Big Island, are just for you. Hilo Airport When we touched down in Hilo, we knew we weren’t in Kansas anymore.  Getting off the plane, warm humid air hit us like a brick in the face after being in the subarctic temperatures on the flight.  And there was this noise, like a screeching bird, …

Oahu, Hawaii, A Paradise

By Guest Writer, Kimberly Hoff Paradise can mean a lot of things.  I might not have thought of Oahu, Hawaii as my ultimate paradise, but if gorgeous warm weather and plenty of fresh fruit and fish to eat are important, then perhaps it is. The dictionary says paradise is “a place of extreme beauty, delight, or happiness.” That I can’t deny. In August of 2017, to commemorate my 50th birthday, I spent two weeks in Hawaiian paradise.  Most of the time was spent on the big island of Hawaii, which I preferred to the hustle and bustle of the more touristy Oahu. …

Traveler’s Over 50: A Self-guided tour of Historic St. Augustine

St. Augustine, Florida, is a city rich in history. I like to imagine living during different eras as I soak in the background and ambiance of a new place. I really can’t see myself living as a pirate, or aboard a Spanish galleon. I do like the idea of lounging (with a wide-brimmed hat and parasol) on the grounds of the newly built hotels in St. Augustine in 1890, as one of “America’s elite.” St. Augustine, founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers, is the oldest continuously occupied city in the continental U.S.  The historical relevance of the earliest U.S. explorers …

Washington, D.C. — An Honor Flight for Veterans

Some of the Veterans were “brothers” since high school. Others served during Vietnam but got to know each other later— through their volunteer work with the prideful Patriot Guard, who provide a motorcycle brigade escort during a veteran’s funeral. On one beautiful spring day in Washington, D.C.  these veterans shared their memories with comrades who know best of the sacrifices made years before. Having returned  from Washington, D.C., on my second of such trips, I’m full of gratitude and pride for our Veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. A non-profit organization, Alabama Freedom Flight, provided a day …

The Upper Florida Keys–A Baby Boomer’s Road Trip

Jimmy Buffett’s 1974 A1A album cover photo said it all — with his surfer-dude look, sitting under a palm tree. If the Baby Boomers had not already taken a road trip to the Florida Keys on the famous highway, this album cover was surely the inspiration to travel to a laid back paradise. My first trek South on Florida Highway A1A was as a college student in a Miata convertible with very little money, a two-man tent and sleeping bags in the tiny trunk. In the ’70s, we didn’t even need reservations in campgrounds, and hardly anyone referred to us as …

Cumberland Island – Wild Horses and Wild Women

By Melanie Pollard Wild horses and wild women have ruled Cumberland Island, Georgia for years. There’s an old saying on the island that if you’re a man, move somewhere else.  Men don’t last long on this island.  Many unlucky men have met their demise here,  but that’s another story for another time. The Spirit of Cumberland Island Of all the islands I visited off the coast of Georgia and Florida, Cumberland was my favorite of the islands.  Cumberland has a spiritual quality to it, a oneness with nature that I have not found on the other islands in the area.  …
